Hello, my lovely Halyu peeps! Guess what we will talk about today. Just a heart, it will be risky, deadly, and voraciously controversial. Any guesses?

The best games have clear rules: you know when they end and how players can win. The excitement comes from the feeling of a ticking clock.

Squid Game, Netflix’s most popular non-English series, follows its own rules. Season 2 has had its share of spotlight, and the show is returning for its third and final season on June 27.

You can now view the teaser, first photos, and key art from the upcoming episodes. But guess what, my dear Hallyu folks, I have something of my own to say.

Will Squid Game Season 3 Fail Like Its Predecessor?

You see, if you ask me, I’m more terrified than excited about the arrival of Squid Game season 3, given the fiasco that occurred with season 2.

Wait! Before you storm off on me, I would like to defend myself. You see, I am not being illogical. I remember when I had just finished the show, and it was a mess!

The characters are all exaggerated and stereotypical anime villains, and the dialogue contains unnecessary filler.

The first season showed real, desperate people without constantly shouting “I’m desperate!”

The side plot went nowhere and had an obvious traitor. The gunfight was cringeworthy, and some characters had too much plot armor.

The second part will be better. I want to like it because the first season was great, but it’s hard to do that.

Confuse? Perplexed? Wait, I will be more tactful, unlike the Squid Game season 2, and list out everything that was seriously wrong with it.

Everything Wrong That Season 2 Did: Squid Game Season 3, Beware!

See, I’m not saying that you can take something unique and rare and create a second version that’s equally thrilling. I know this is practically impossible.

But then again, it is completely unnatural to expect from us, as the audience, that we have no expectations for the second season of one of our most loved Korean dramas.

The Former One Was Fresher

When Squid Game was released in 2021, it quickly gained popularity due to its shocking concept.

Ordinary people facing financial difficulties compete in a deadly game where they are eliminated if they lose.

The show offered a harsh critique of capitalism and presented a fresh take on the battle royale genre, keeping viewers engaged throughout its nine-episode run.

Season 2 of Squid Game returned to the concept of the games, introducing new challenges to surprise the audience.

However, it was very challenging for Season 2 to have the same impact as Season 1, and most viewers likely knew this before they started watching.

The Former One Sticked To The Real World

Another important aspect of Squid Game is why everyone felt they had to join the games, even when they could leave.

Season 1 begins slowly, showcasing how each character struggles with financial difficulties and feels trapped in their challenging lives.

This setup makes the deadly games seem like the only way out for both the characters and the audience. In contrast, Season 2 jumps straight into the action.

For the first one and a half episodes, we follow Seong Gi-hun as he tries to find the Front Man and stop the games.

However, he soon finds himself competing again. While it makes sense for the writers to speed things up, since some viewers might want the games to start sooner, this approach makes the games feel less necessary and impactful compared to those in the first season.

The Former One Had Clarity

Viewers can watch Season 1 of Squid Game and skip Season 2 completely while still enjoying a full story.

However, Netflix has misled its users by labeling what it called Season 2 as a complete season. In reality, it feels like the first half of the season, with Season 3 expected to be the second half.

This means the story feels incomplete and stops right when it starts to get interesting. This issue will be resolved when Season 3 is released later in 2025, but the unusual choice made Season 2 less engaging than Season 1.

Miscellaneous Mishaps

There are also other major mishaps, which I am unable to categorize. However, I won’t forget and forgive them, and neither should you.

One of the primary ones is the change of color contrast and lighting. Why, just why?! The aesthetic of Season 1 was at its best, and I want it back in Squid Game Season 3.

The main difference between the two seasons is that a key rule changed. In Season 1, if the majority of players voted to end the game, the money would go to the families of the deceased players.

This made most people reluctant to quit after each round. In Season 2, however, the money collected would be shared among the players who survived.

I’m curious if the Front Man made this change to show how greedy people can be, since now they have a reason to continue playing, even if they could quit. Or was it something the creators of the series overlooked?

What Can Viewers Expect From Squid Game Season 3?

Directed By Date Of Release Where To Watch Language Availability
Hwang Dong-hyuk June 27, 2025 Netflix  English, Spanish (Latin America), French, Korean (Original), and Mandarin (Guoyu)

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently shared when fans can expect Season 3 to premiere. He believes it will debut in the summer or fall of 2025.

This means fans might have to wait at least a year before seeing the next chapter of the show. Season 3 will continue the intense story of Seong Gi-Hun, played by Lee Jung-jae.

Hwang noted that Gi-Hun will be in a very different place compared to Season 2. He has lost everything that is worth something, but he has also lost his only friend.

Additionally, we also have to notice that he has also faced numerous failures in his attempts to stop the risky games.

Furthermore, Gi-Hun is now at a turning point in his life. Hwang asked, “What will he choose to do next? Will he continue his mission, or will he give up?”

He also pointed out that the mid-credits scene in Season 2 is a significant hint about what to expect in Season 3. This scene suggests that the story will become darker and more complex.

Fans should pay attention to this teaser, as it may offer clues about the series’ future. Have you noticed that the details about the plot are still secret?

Nevertheless, we can sense that it’s clear that Season 3 will raise the stakes and develop characters more deeply.

Gi-Hun’s journey will be key, and the new season will likely explore his emotional struggles more.

Oh, I forgot to mention! Teh audience is expecting new characters and adding more layers to the story.

Furthermore, fans can anticipate more twists, turns, and exciting moments as the story unfolds toward its thrilling conclusion.
